For our 40th anniversary this year, we have decided to have a 'Fundraiser of the Month' throughout the year. This month, we have The Hampden Arms. Louise Lucas, owner of the pub in Bucks, shares her connection to MPS.
"We moved into the Hampden Arms in Great Hampden, Bucks in 2003 and as a family were warmly welcomed by the whole village.
In 2005 I fell pregnant with my first child and gave birth to a healthy daughter Evie. At the same time, the daughter of a couple who lived in Great Hampden had a son who sadly was diagnosed with a disease that comes under the MPS umbrella.
We came to see first-hand the effect of having a terminally ill child on the whole family - from mum and dad to siblings, grandparents, aunts and cousins and the sometimes painful side effects of living with the pressure of hospital visits.
As a mum to a newly born healthy child, I wanted to help as much as possible and we became aware of the MPS Society and all they do for the family. We hold pub quizzes annually on MPS Awareness Day and our Boxing Day quiz has become a legend in its own right - with the pub full to bursting - some years customers have had to go home to get their own chair as we have been so busy!
I am sharing our story as I want to spread the word of the amazing work that the MPS Society do in research and supporting families affected by MPS and other rare diseases."
