There’s something lovely about September, a fresh start and back to routines. We know that education can look very different for families living with MPS and related conditions, so it’s lovely to see the different ways everyone is starting the new academic year.
We asked our families to send us a photo or little update as they started another year, and we’ve loved seeing all your smiley faces and hearing your stories. From starting preschool and settling into a new setting, to moving into a new class or returning to familiar routines there’s lots happening as everyone gets back into the swing of things.
Lilia
Lilia is 11 and has just moved up to secondary school. It is on the same site as her primary school but in a new building and with different teachers and routines. She seems to be very happy and the MPS Society have been really helpful in offering a talk with her new class team to provide an insight into Lilia’s condition.
Rubina
Rubina graduated from college this summer and is now attending day centre from Monday to Friday. She has gained an entry level 2 qualification in employability skills.
Gwyddno
Gwyddno loves school, but he loves staying home and playing LEGO even more. So we were a little trepidatious about his first week back. However, once his new black shoes were on, he was ready and excited to start year 2. He was most excited about seeing his friends every day, getting to know his new teacher and the classroom. He was less excited about "doing some work" and mam and dad were excited to get back to a routine, but less excited about the pre-school-run battles.
Megan
Megan was happy to go back for her last year in key stage 4 and she is looking forward to a trip to the Yorkshire Dales soon.
Joe
Sixth form for Joe was a very easy transition as it is based at the same school that he has attended since he was five and he has the same teacher as last year. He was absolutely delighted to go back after the summer holidays as Joe had spent many mornings wearing his backpack and looking out of the window. Finally the minibus appeared again and he happily got on board!
Gunner
He has gone into year 2 at a SEN school and is loving his new class. Gunner has started singing and dancing as his new teacher plays the guitar.
Kole
Kole started preschool in September and we chose a setting that could give him love, comfort, understanding and the ability to thrive. We truly believe we’ve found just that. Because MPS IIIA is so rare, Hannah and Gemma from the MPS Society Support Team provided the staff, including Kole’s 1:1, with professional awareness training so they could understand MPS III Sanfilippo in much more depth. He absolutely loves his time there, and as his mum, I genuinely couldn’t want for anything more.
