For Ria, the annual Weekend of Hope and Remembrance in September has been a great source of comfort and support. This vital community event provides a safe space for families to remember loved ones among others who truly understand. Ria's story highlights the importance of being able to step out of everyday life to reflect and share memories with people who can relate and offer solace.
Attending the MPS Society Bereavement Weekend has been one of the most meaningful experiences in my journey as a parent who lost my daughter, Jasmin, to MPS IIIA on 1 March 2011 aged 12.
This adult weekend offers a safe space for bereaved parents like me to come together, share our stories, and support one another in our shared grief.
From the moment I arrived at the beautiful hotel, I felt a sense of calm and welcome wash over me. The environment was not only serene but also filled with opportunities for connection. The MPS Society organised various activities that catered to our needs, whether it was sharing laughter, shedding tears, or engaging in thought-provoking discussions.
Being surrounded by others who truly understand the weight of our loss is both comforting and liberating.
The weekend is filled with moments of genuine connection, as we chat over meals, share stories during group sessions, and even engage in activities that spark joy amidst the sorrow.
I found that the simple act of laughing with fellow bereaved parents, as well as crying together, created a profound sense of camaraderie.
It was a reminder that we are not alone in our journeys; we are part of a community that understands our pain and celebrates the memories of our beloved children.
Staying at the hotel was a gift in itself. With so much to do and explore, from delightful meals to various entertainment options, the weekend felt like a much-needed retreat from the realities of life.
Each moment spent there allowed me to reflect on my experiences with Jasmin and gain strength from the stories shared by others.
The Annual Bereavement Weekend is more than just an event; it is a sanctuary where we can feel free to express our emotions and heal together. The support provided by the MPS Society enables us to honour our children while fostering connections that last beyond the weekend.
I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to participate in such a meaningful experience, and I hope that we can continue to raise funds to ensure that this vital support remains available for years to come.
